Industrial Visits

Kallada Hydro Electric Power Project, Themala

On December 27th, 2024, our team had the opportunity to visit the Kallada Thenmala Hydro Dam, located in Thenmala, a region in Kollam district near the Kallada River. The visit provided us valuable insights into the dam's operation and the surrounding ecosystem. The operator gave us a detailed explanation about the various machines and equipment used for Power Generation. He guided us through every department, ensuring we understood the role of each system and its function in the power generation process.

The Kallada power station utilises the water release from Kallada Irrigation Reservoir. Kallada power station is the first of its kind in Kerala in utilising the water for irrigation release for power generation. The dam is owned by the Irrigation Department. After power generation, water from the power station is released to the Kallada River. From there it is diverted to irrigation canal by diversion weir during irrigation seasons. The plant has a generation Capacity of 15MW and an annual generation of 65 MU (Million Units). The Plant consists of two generators, each with a capacity of 7.5 MW . The dam associated with the station has a cross-sectional area of 24 square km and a height of 118 meters. The powerhouse also includes an 11/220 kV transformer substation for the transmission of power The Power generated in the station is evacuated through two 66 kV feeders
